I’m a Personal Trainer, so I tell my clients that one source of exercise is not going to get you the results you need. You need both resistance training AND cardiovascular exercise to really see results. Resistance training builds strength with weight lifting, body weight exercises, and many other options. You also need at least 150 minutes a week of cardiovascular training to strengthen your heart and blood flow to your organs.
This morning I was thinking about every aspect of my life. Is there one aspect of my life where just one source of something is good enough? The only ones I could think of were my wife and religion. Outside of those two things, there is nothing else in my life where just one source is good enough! Think about it.
You need more than one friend…at least I do. I have different friends that have different interests. I have some friends that I go to artsy movies with. I have others that I go to sporting events with (heck, some like hockey, some like basketball, football, baseball, etc.). I have others that I go to see live music with. I have friends that are foodies.
You need more than one source of news. If you sit there and just ingest what one channel or broadcaster says, you are getting your news slanted in one direction! It doesn’t matter what station that is, they have a bias. This is more true now than ever!
If you get all of your nutrition from one source of food, that isn’t good for you. You need protein, good carbohydrates, and fats. I can’t go an entire day just eating baked chicken breasts. I need my protein shake, my vitamin drink, my eggs, my onions, bell peppers, fruit, steak, tomatoes, supplements, etc.
If you get all of your groceries from one grocery store, you are not getting the best deals. I go to at least 4 different grocery stores. I admit, Plano, TX is almost a mecca for grocery stores. We have your regular stores like Kroger, Albertsons, and Tom Thumb. We also have Whole Foods, Central Market, Market Street, Trader Joe’s, etc. I get great deals on great produce and meats!
There is a reason why, in college, they make you take so many different classes. If you get all of your knowledge from just once type of class or teacher, you are doing yourself a disservice. You need to know something about many things to truly be enlightened. Heck, even though I believe in one religion, I study a few. I find it fascinating! You learn so much about people by their religion. I love learning about different cultures as well. Learn from as many different cultures as you can. Don’t judge one to be better than the other. There is good in all of them!
Also, don’t just have one source of income. What? You want me to have more than one job? YES! That doesn’t mean to go out and work for a bunch of companies at once. Let’s say your job is just for the paycheck and you don’t like going, but you have to. Well, find a way to have something on the side! That’s how most musicians or artists operate. Find a plan B. Most millionaires have 7 sources of income. There will NEVER be a job or source of income that doesn’t run dry at some time. You will NOT have your job working for your company forever. It’s a fact these days.
I’ve worked as a Wine Specialist (Enophile), Radio Talk Show Host, Radio Traffic Reporter, and now a Personal Fitness Trainer. I’ve been let go from 4 radio jobs. That industry is very volatile. If you’re not getting the ratings, you are gone. “What have yo done for me today?” is kind of a motto there. It’s also why so many radio host ramble like they are insane. They have to be to keep an audience. I was laid off in the wine industry in 2008 when people stopped buying expensive wines. I worked at a store where we specialized in Burgundy, Bordeaux, Italian Super Tuscan, Australian, and high end Californian wines. People stopped buying $50+ wines and I was a casualty. Then I went back into radio as a Traffic Reporter. People were getting laid off left and right around me and I made $24,000 a year in the 5th largest market in the country, Dallas, TX. I didn’t get a raise for 4 years and I had enough of being told,”Be happy you have a job.” I quit.
What do all of these have in common? Each time, they were my ONLY source of income. I’ve learned my lesson. Sooner or later, your source of income or “cookie jar” as I like to call it, will be empty. You need multiple cookie jars in your life. Why? When that one cookie jar runs empty, you will have others to keep getting those great tasting cookies, or income, from.
I’m not just a Personal Trainer, but it’s what I LOVE to do. After losing over 300 pounds, I want to improve people’s health with exercise and knowledge. There will never be a time in my life when I’m not doing that. I also am helping people with their finances. I love that aspect of Advocare. Not only do I improve people’s nutrition and health, but their finances if they choose. I also love to travel and I’m starting to get involved in a travel company that myself and others get to visit places around the world with! I’m also investing money in stocks and funds. My dad is a retired Business Professor and he’s been telling me this for as long as I’ve been alive. It just took me until I was 40 to realize the truth in what he was telling me!
Add variety to every aspect of your life and you will have more freedom and happiness than you could ever imagine! Plus, you can help hundreds or thousands of people do the same thing along the way. I can’t think of a more gratifying existence!
